A new translation of Ponson du Terrail's "Rocambole" by his great grandnephew, Jean de Ponson du Terrail. Ponson du Terrail (1829 -1871) was the most famous French writer of his time, the most read, the most sought after by newspapers and readers, and the first of his generation to become wealthy through sales of his novels. Those feats must be measured in terms of his contemporaries, which included Alexandre Dumas, Eugene Sue, Victor Hugo, Paul Feval, Gustave Flaubert, and George Sand. Ponson du Terrail's novels captivated an immense audience more than twenty years in France, and throughout the world. He reached fame at age 27 and remained the most popular writer of his time, overshadowing all of his colleagues in terms of sales and fans. Gifted with a virtuous imagination and the ability to write very fast, he wrote over 200 literary works in a span of only 20 years. This new translation by his great grandnephew, Jean de Ponson du Terrail, takes us to the start of the Rocambole series: "Two brothers, born of the same mother but different fathers, become mortal enemies and fight each other on the streets of mid-19th century Paris. One dedicates his life to defend the weak and the helpless; the other spends his time creating evil plans to defraud others. A battle of wills and wits ensues in a fast-moving, complex plot."

Tony Duvert's novel Atlantic Island (originally published in French in 1979) takes place in the soul-crushing suburbs of a remote island off the coast of France. It is told through the shifting perspectives of a group of pubescent and prepubescent boys, ages seven to fourteen, who gather together at night in secret to carry out a series of burglaries throughout their neighborhood. The boys vandalize living rooms and kitchens and make off with, for the most part, petty objects of no value. Their exploits leave the adult community perplexed and outraged, especially when a death occurs and the stakes grow more serious. Duvert's portrayal of adult life on this Atlantic Island is savage to the point of satire, but the boys and their thieving and sexuality are explored with sympathy. A novel on the loneliness of childhood and the solitude induced by geographical space, it is also an empathetic and generous homage to youth, a crime novel without suspense, and an unsettling fairytale for adults. Atlantic Island today is a forgotten gem of French literature: Duvert's own version of The Lord of the Flies, it is attentive to details and precise in its depiction of French mores and language. An indictment against the violence embedded in a middle-class community, it is also a love letter to childhood, incorporating the heroic vistas in which a child needs only a fertile imagination to become the secret hero of his or her own life.

This book examines four novels and contemporary views about novels which can contribute to a fuller understanding of the great English novels of the 1840s. The novels chosen for this study are of the 1840s as well as for all time. English novels of the 1840s are particularly interesting because it was during this period that the novel was in the process of becoming the dominant form and it was during this same period that critics began to say what they continued to say more forcibly for the next forty years or so.

Revised to meet the changing literary interests and emphases of the twenty-first century, the second edition of The Harper Handbook to Literature adds, augments, and clarifies definitions. Arranged in alphabetical order, this Handbook aims to satisfy curiosity about terms such as syzygy or zeugma, concepts such as structuralism or phenomenology, and literary genres and movements such as Drama or Goliardic verse. Over 100 items are new to this edition, including Queer Theory, Reader-Response Theory, Cultural Studies, Anxiety of Influence, Logocentrism, Orientalism, and Saussurean Linguistics, to name only a few. Entries generally range from a few words to summary essays with bibliographies for further study, and cross-references lead from definitions to larger concepts. A practical "Chronology of Literature and World Events, " at the end of the text presents a comprehensive timeline from the earliest cities of Mesopotamia to contemporary names and titles.
