The events at a Fundamentalist Mormon compound in Texas ignited a national dialogue on religious sects. Formed as a splinter group of the LDS church, these secretive cults exist in an insular world far removed from mainstream American culture. A world of abuse and twisted theology that seems too bizarre to be true. Yet for Brian J. Mackert, life inside this sect was all too real. As a son in a family of one father, four wives, and 31 children, Brian experienced firsthand the devastating realities of polygamous cults. Now Brian tells his remarkable story of tragedy and healing. Illegitimate takes readers behind the shocking headlines and inside the walls of this controversial sect. Brian reveals a world of loving mothers and abusive fathers, devoted children and sibling rivalry, fake religion and the truth eventually found in Christ—outside the walls of the FLDS. Ultimately, Illegitimate demonstrates the incredible love of God, and His ability to bring light into the darkest of places.

Since the 1920s, Art Deco, or "The Modern Style," has delighted people with its innovative use of materials and designs that capture the spirit of optimism to create the style of the future. Although the Detroit metro area is primarily known as an industrial region, it boasts some of the finest examples of Art Deco in the country. Art Deco in Detroit explores the wide-ranging variety of these architectural marvels, from world-famous structures like the Fisher and Penobscot Buildings, to commercial buildings, theaters, homes, and churches. Through a panorama of photographs, authors Rebecca Binno Savage and Greg Kowalski take readers on a fascinating tour of this influential movement and its manifestations in and around Detroit. The grandeur evident in some of the major buildings reflects a time when artisans and architects collaborated to craft structures that transcend functionality-they endure as standing works of art.

Essays in Irish Labour History is a tribute to the late Professor John W Boyle, University of Guelph, Canada and a leading practitioner of Irish labour history, and his late wife Elizabeth. Boyles specialism was in nineteenth century labour history, with a particular emphasis on Dublin and Belfast, cities to which he had academic and personal attachments, and these interests are well reflected in this book. The history of labour in Ulster is especially well covered, as is that of Protestant workers throughout the island. The collection also includes substantial scholarly articles that reflect ongoing research and areas that have thus far been neglected, such as the place for casual labour in nineteenth century Ireland and the impact of religion on the Irish Labour Party, 1922-73. The range of topics is broad and includes an obituary essay on the Boyles and an interrogation of Irish historiography and the working class.

“Caught with Bibles: a True Story from Communist Romania” is the story of Constantin Sfatcu, a Romanian Christian who was arrested in 1985 for transporting Bibles in his car. He was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. The account is related by his sister, Genovieva, who was rescued from Romania by President Jimmy Carter and emigrated to the United States in 1980. Through her struggles with grief over her brother’s imprisonment, Stephen steps into her life to encourage her. As a prisoner’s wife, Estera Sfatcu suffers months of torment, not knowing whether her husband is dead or alive. She and Constantin’s brother, Teodor Sfatcu, his wife Erzso and their mother, Maria Sfatcu, endure many threats and interrogations. Their experiences illustrate what life is like for a prisoner’s family. The Lord used an article in the New York Times, a senator’s visit to the prison, attendance at the trial by U.S. Congressmen and Members of the British Parliament, as well as economic pressure on Romania by the Reagan administration to answer prayer for Constantin and his family. His release in 1986 was a victory for the suffering church, but also a lesson for those in the free world, that they should value their freedom. The Sfatcu family received political asylum in the U.S. and now reside in California. Young people and adults alike will benefit from reading this book.
