The order Carnivora has recently been recognized in the field of comparative cognition for its potential to shape our understanding of the evolution of intelligence and various cognitive abilities. My dissertation contributes to this growing area by presenting three studies that evaluate both the evolution and the underlying cognitive mechanisms of behavioral flexibility within Carnivora. First, I found differences between cats (Felidae), bears (Ursidae), and spotted hyenas in problem-solving on a multi-access box (MAB), although all three families showed equivalent behavioral flexibility. Second, I showed that MAB performance appears to be linked more closely with innovation than inhibition (both components of behavioral flexibility). Third, I found that a generalist diet strongly predicts problem-solving success on a single-access puzzle box across multiple species from several families within Carnivora. Overall, the order Carnivora presents a varied and useful group to continue evaluating mechanisms and evolution of intelligence.
