She can't settle for some temporary loving. She and her son need, and deserve, more. Zane has always responded to the call of duty. But that dedication has meant saying goodbye to Nora far too often. "This is a biography of Donald Hollowell, one of Georgia's foremost civil rights attorneys. The bulk of the manuscript is focused on Hollowell's career as a lawyer and, in particular, his work on key cases in the 1950s and 1960s, but Daniels also includes a discussion of Hollowell's early years, education, military service, and employment as a regional director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In researching the book, Daniels relied on personal interviews as well as the personal papers of civil rights advocates and Southern opposition leaders, court records, newspaper accounts, and other archival sources that offered insight into Hollowell's activism and lawyering. In addition, Daniels conducted three extensive personal interviews with Hollowell that provide firsthand information about his childhood and early background, the influences on his desire to become an advocate for social justice, and his experiences as a civil rights activist and lawyer. Daniels also conducted several interviews with Hollowell's wife, Louise T. Hollowell, to whom he was married for 62 years. The narrative captures Hollowell's civil rights work in Atlanta as well as his work with grassroots leaders in other parts of Georgia. It covers well- known civil rights cases such as the desegregation of University of Georgia while also chronicling the lesser known, yet nonetheless significant, desegregation cases that provided the groundwork for that case. Daniels illuminates Hollowell's behind-the scenes work to help bring about social change in Georgia, his collaboration with proponents of direct action, and the intersection of his work with that of Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund's campaign for equal justice"--

Involved for over thirty years in the politics of Iraq, Ali A. Allawi was a long-time opposition leader against the Baathist regime. In the post-Saddam years he has held important government positions and participated in crucial national decisions and events. In this book, the former Minister of Defense and Finance draws on his unique personal experience, extensive relationships with members of the main political groups and parties in Iraq, and deep understanding of the history and society of his country to answer the baffling questions that persist about its current crises. What really led the United States to invade Iraq, and why have events failed to unfold as planned? The Occupation of Iraq examines what the United States did and didn't know at the time of the invasion, the reasons for the confused and contradictory policies that were enacted, and the emergence of the Iraqi political class during the difficult transition process. The book tracks the growth of the insurgency and illuminates the complex relationships among Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds. Bringing the discussion forward to the reconfiguration of political forces in 2006, Allawi provides in these pages the clearest view to date of the modern history of Iraq and the invasion that changed its course in unpredicted ways.

The book leads the reader through the past to the present and here leaves him amid active and progressive men who are advancing, along with him, toward the future. Including, as it does, lives of men now living, it constitutes a connecting link between what has gone before and what is to come after. It is therefore fitting that it should be dedicated to a prominent man of our day in preference to one of former times. The matter presented, in the nature of things, is largely biographical. There can be no foundation for history without biography. History is a generalization of particulars. It presents wide extended views. To use a paradox, history gives us but a part of history. That other part which it does not give us, the part which introduces us to the thoughts, aspirations and daily life of a people, is supplied by biography. The men whose deeds are recorded in this book were or are deeply identified with Texas, and the preservation in this volume in enduring form of some remembrance of them—their names, who and what they were—has been a pleasant task to one who feels a deep interest and pride in Texas—its past history, its heroes and future destiny.

This biography examines the long life of the traveller and author Stephen Graham. Graham walked across large parts of the Tsarist Empire in the years before 1917, describing his adventures in a series of books and articles that helped to shape attitudes towards Russia in Britain and the United States. In later years he travelled widely across Europe and North America, meeting some of the best known writers of the twentieth century, including H.G.Wells and Ernest Hemingway. Graham also wrote numerous novels and biographies that won him a wide readership on both sides of the Atlantic. This book traces Graham’s career as a world traveller, and provides a rich portrait of English, Russian and American literary life in the first half of the twentieth century. It also examines how many aspects of his life and writing coincide with contemporary concerns, including the development of New Age spirituality and the rise of environmental awareness. Beyond Holy Russia is based on extensive research in archives of private papers in Britain and the USA and on the many works of Graham himself. The author describes with admirable tact and clarity Graham’s heterodox and convoluted spiritual quest. The result is a fascinating portrait of a man who was for many years a significant literary figure on both sides of the Atlantic.
